The iPhone's malfunctioning headphone jack

June 19th, 2008 § 0 comments

This morning I noticed that, while typing on my iPhone, I didn’t hear that familiar little “click” with each key press. I thought I had accidentally toggled the ringer button as I’ve done before, but it was set to ring.

I hit the lock button and didn’t hear the locking sound, either. Concerned, I played a song. Nothing. I pressed the volume button on the phone’s side and the screen read “Headphones.” Drat, it seems to think there are headphones inserted.

I put my headphones in and listened. Yup, heard the music. So I rebooted the phone, but there was no change. I made a phone call and toggled the speaker button on and off. No change. I reset the phone with the hold and home button. Still no sound without headphones.

Finally, I followed some great advice from Twitter and blasted a bit of compressed air into the headphone port and that did it. Sound has been restored.

It must have interprteted collected “junk” as headphones. Just thought I’d share incase any of you run into the same problem.
