HP to acquire Palm

HP will reportedly pay $1.2 billion for Palm. Todd Bradley, executive vice president, Personal Systems Group, HP:

“Palm’s innovative operating system provides an ideal platform to expand HP’s mobility strategy and create a unique HP experience spanning multiple mobile connected devices.”

Jon Rubinstein, chairman and chief executive officer, Palm:

“HP’s longstanding culture of innovation, scale and global operating resources make it the perfect partner to rapidly accelerate the growth of webOS.”

webOS on the Slate would be very interesting. This is a good move for both parties. In fact, it puts HP in Apple’s position of owning the hardware and the OS.

Rumor: Best Buy will carry Palm Pre first

Boy Genius suggests that 4,500 Palm Pres will be distributed to the US’s 599 Best Buy locations (that’s 7 units per store) on June 7th. You’ve got to wonder if they’ll be selling these units or just setting up demos. It seems silly to knowingly sell out within a few minutes and create frustrated would-be customers.

The Palm Pre

For me, the word “Palm” became synonymous with “frustration” several years ago, mostly due to hotsync issues on the Mac. So they’ve been off my rader. Until yesterday.

The new Pre looks very nice. Small and tidy, it’s got a UI similiar to the iPhone’s. The difference between the Pre and other wanna-bes is that the UI doesn’t seem rushed in an effort to imitate the iPhone, but seems at home on the Pre.  Engadget has a nice writeup and video.

No word on pricing or availability yet. However, if the price is right and the UI is as snappy as it appears in Engadget’s video, this could signifiy the resurrection of Palm.
