Regarding Boxee and Hulu

February 21st, 2009 § 0 comments

As a customer with Boxee installed on his Apple TV, I’m very disappointed that Hulu content is no longer available via Boxee. However, I don’t blame the folks at Hulu. I blame short-sighted and pig-headed network executives whose decisions are motivated by outdated thinking and greed.

The days of sitting in front of the tube from 8:00 PM – 10:00 PM Eastern are over. I want ubiquitous access to video content. If I want to see my favorite episode of The Office while I’m sitting at home or at my physician’s waiting room, I’m going to.

Too bad these fools are forcing me to do it illegally.

How is that working for you? Boxee on Apple TV? My husband and I are thinking of ditching regular t.v., getting a nice Apple monitor and using Apple TV to check out the shows really like. I’d be interested to hear your thoughts on what works and what doesn’t.

The Apple TV is really nice. I wrote up my thoughts after my first month with it here. The short version: There’s absolutely zero learning curve. TV shows and movies purchased from iTunes look great and are ready to view only seconds after purchase.

It’s much more convenient than DVDs, which my kids scratch right to the trash can anyway.

Adding Boxee is very simple and definitely an improvement. The content isn’t HD, but looks no worse than standard def. Sometimes I don’t want to pay to watch an episode of a show I like, I just want to get caught up.

Losing Hulu is a big loss, but I’m hopeful that something will be worked out in the future. In short (I know, too late), I like the Apple TV, even if it isn’t everything I want.

    Dave,

I was right with you until you said, “Too bad these fools are forcing me to do it illegally.”

    Do you seriously mean that?

What if we do a find-and-replace on your article and replace television shows with Feraris? I’d like to drive a Ferari, but the damn dealer charges too much. I’m going to drive one… too bad they’re forcing me to do it illegally.

Now, I know that intellectual property is different from chattel and that the law needs clarity. But, right now, in the eyes of the law, stealing video content is the same as stealing physical things. Do you really mean what you say?

  • Dave says:

Oh, Mr. D. Sometimes I think you live to torment me. :)

    Of course stealing is wrong.
