The once mighty Star Wars galaxy has become a parody of itself, largely in part to shamelss, incessant merchandising. I can’t respect a franchise that’s so obviously used as a cash grab.
The folks at Spyglass must have the same goal for Star Trek movie as their marketing eruption gets underway. I’m sure I’ll be completely turned off by May.
Trying to think of genre movie franchises that have turned out OK despite massive merchandising. Nolan’s Batman…maybe I could think of more if I were actually awake. Anyway, with Star Wars you can clearly see where whatever creative vision Lucas had was corrupted by the merchandising. Such a shame. I think Star Trek can avoid the same fate if Abrams et al can maintain creative integrity, like Nolan.
How, exactly, was Lucas’s vision for Star Wars ruined by merchandising? He retained all rights to the merchandise! (source Any ruining you accuse someone of was obviously up to him.
Furthermore, as noted here, the merchandising effort was responsible for most of your knowledge of your beloved Star Wars Universe. If not for action figures, how the hell would you even know Boba Fett’s name?
Finally, even the original show’s cast were immortalized on drinking glasses!
I just don’t see what your point is.
