Every weekday, I post the best of what I find online for you to read. Here’s today’s installment.
The iPad, the Kindle and the future of books. “’Ultimately, Apple is in the device—not the content—business,’ the Apple insider said. ‘Steve Jobs wants to make sure content people are his partner. Steve is in the I win/you win school. Jeff Bezos is in the I win/you lose school.’”
Embed Vimeo videos, play on iPad. A simple script from Squarespace’s Krystyn Heide that lets you embed non-HTML 5 Vimeo videos to play in-line on an iPad. Krystyn notes: “You need Vimeo Plus and mobile embedding optimized in Settings > Embed.”
I love you, Winnie. Stunning. If you don’t cry you don’t have a soul.

If we only knew.
“Apple has been in talks regarding the licensing of music videos for sale through the iTunes Music Store, fostering speculation about the release of a video-capable iPod.”
Related: did I really write that 5 years ago?! Goodness.

3g iPads will be unlocked in Japan. Addressing rumors to the contrary, Apple confirmed today that Japanese customers traveling internationally will be able to use micro SIM cards from foreign carriers, thereby avoiding huge roaming fees. Likewise, visitors to Japan will be able to use their iPads with the country’s Softbank provider.
Analyst: Foxconn will ship 24 million 4G iPhones in 2010. An initial 4.5 million units go out in the first half of the year, probably starting in June, reserving 19.5 million phones for the rest of 2010.
Google: Street View cars collected Wi-Fi data. Oops.
Steve Jobs debates Ryan Tate via email as Gawker employees continue to act like self-righteous adolescents.
Piper Jaffray: iPad is cannibalizing iPod sales. As Steve Jobs once said (I’m paraphrasing here), if anyone’s going to cannibalize our sales, it might as well be us.
On-board the iPad Cluetrain. “The iPad is a game-changer … 44% of iPad buyers view the iPad as a replacement for a laptop. CTO’s of huge companies like EMC are discovering that their computer-using family members are flocking to the iPad and ignoring their laptops and desktops…”
We are the family that came with the photo in your picture frame. “You’re probably wondering about the vintage jeep and hot air balloon in the background of our picture. That’s our jeep. I restored it myself. You’d think I’d be tired of working with my hands after fixing brains as a neurosurgeon all day, but I’m not.”

MobileCrunch notes that AT&T has moved their upgrade eligibility date from 11/21 to 6/21 for several customers. Actually, it’s not much to get excited about. “Upgrade eligibility” simply refers to the date that the customer is released from their contractual obligation and free to upgrade to a new phone without paying an additional fee.
As MacRumors notes, AT&T has traditionally changed this date for users who spend a lot on their monthly bills. AT&T:
“…the more a customer spends with us, the quicker they become eligible for a price break on a new device. For example, iPhone customers who spend more than $99 a month per line with us generally are eligible for an upgrade between 12 and 18 months into their contract.”
So this is just an example of AT&T “rewarding” the big spenders, and not indicative of an iPhone release date.
It’s true that Apple typically releases new iPhones in June and I don’t expect this year to be any different (though the announcement will be a bummer as we pretty much know what’s coming). Conspiracy fans will note that June 21, 2010 is 12 months (to the business day) after the iPhone 3GS launch. I tip my tin foil hat to you.
I checked my eligibility status this afternoon and it’s still listed as November 21st. But I’m a cheapskate.

John Biggs takes an illogical leap at Crunch Gear, claiming that a wholly unsubstantiated rumor “…very nearly confirms a Verizon launch of the iPhone at the end of the summer.”
No, it doesn’t.

Mike Halsey:
“With a starting price tag of $500 [the iPad is] simply too expensive, twice the price of a better specification netbook and the same price as significantly better laptops. At this price it’s [sic] unique selling points of multi-touch and… erm… whatever the others are, are simply not enough to win hearts and minds.”
If current sales trends continue, the iPad will reach the $1B revenue mark faster than any other consumer product ever. Pre-orders for Australia, Italy, the UK and 6 other countries began today. International delivery will begin on May 28th. I’ve bookmarked this article to revisit at the end of the June quarter.

“The iPad is not going to be Apple’s next runaway best seller.”
One million units sold in 28 days. Apple could realistically realize $1B in revenue during the iPad’s 1st quarter of availability. Stock is limited in Apple’s retail stores. They can’t even keep the case on shelves.
Carl Howe:
“Apple’s iPad will likely take the crown for the fastest consumer product growth to the $1 billion revenue mark in history.”
Right again, John.

A great idea that I’ve used myself. When you’ve been away from your inbox for too long, it’s easiest to just delete everything, explain what happened to your contacts and ask them to re-send anything that was important. The last time I did it, less than 1/2 of the original mess came back.

“Microsoft execs informed the internal team that had been working on the tablet device that the project would no longer be supported. Courier had never been publicly announced or acknowledged as a Microsoft product.”
Too bad, it was a nice-looking concept. One can only assume that Apple’s low-cost tablet (the Courier’s dual displays would have put it in another price category) and the threat of a webOS-based Slate from HP hastened its demise.
