Stymied

Here’s the issue.

I’ve set up a WordPress blog with my contact form plugin of choice, Contact Form 7. For some reason, messages to the target email address (associated with a Network Solutions domain) via the contact form won’t go through.

Now, if I insert ANY other email address, it works fine. I tried other contact plugins like Clean-Contact and cforms with the exact same result.

Do you have an idea? I’ve been at this for hours. Thanks.

Update: The service has been crippled “…due to overwhelming demand.” The pendulum is swinging.

The 70-minute review of The Phantom Menace

December 18th, 2009 § 0 comments § permalink

Every science fiction fan in their mid-thirties has a deep, almost pathological affection for Star Wars. While sitting in the theater as 6- and 7-year-olds, we surrendered ourselves to George Lucas’s universe like a post-coital praying mantis.

The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi* delivered on their promises of bigger and better Star Wars and a satisfying conclusion to the story. There were rumors of three more movies. Fifteen years passed with nothing and then, in 1999, The Phantom Menace was released. Finally, after nearly two decades, we were to be rewarded.

To say that we left the theater disappointed is like saying the sun is a little hot. I’ve tried to express the weight of this let down before, but I’ve never done it as well as some guy from Milwaukee, WI. You’ll be tempted to turn this off at first, but please don’t. Watch all 70 minutes. It’s fantastic and 100% accurate. Click below to watch all 7 segments of this epic rant.

*OK, so Jedi cheesed out a bit with the Ewoks. But we were willing to let that go in light of the first two.

Two Nook reviews

David Pogue, reviewing the Nook for The New York Times:

“To use the technical term, it’s slower than an anesthetized slug in winter.”

Walt Mossberg, reviewing the Nook for All Things Digital:

“My recommendation on the Nook is to wait, even if you prefer its features to the Kindle’s. It’s not fully baked yet.”

I’ll be taking Walt’s advice.

The sorry state of beer & alcohol sites

December 7th, 2009 § 0 comments § permalink

Smashing Magazine wails on beer and alcohol sites, from the useless age verification screens (anyone capable of subtraction can get past one) to the outdated splash animations.

“To put it quite bluntly, the designers and developers in the beer and alcohol website industry should be ashamed of themselves for creating such horrendous user experiences.”

It goes on from there.

Yoritsuki for iPhone

I’ve been enjoying Yoritsuki for iPhone ($1.99US) all week. It doesn’t do much, other than look nice and help me relax, but that’s enough to earn a permanent spot on my iPhone. Plus, the folks at HYBRIDWORKS have released gorgeous Mac & PC icons and wallpapers to go along with it. If you’re the meditative type, you’ll enjoy this app. In the meantime, check out my review at TUAW.
