Very funny video. Best line: “You can’t arrange your icons by penis.”

While we’re at it, how do people work like this?

In praise of Kubrick's editing

June 25th, 2008 § 0 comments § permalink

Adam Polselli has writen a great analysis of The Shining’s hallway scene.

“During a scene in Stanley Kubrick’s horror film The Shining (1980), when Danny envisions the girls in a hallway of the Overlook Hotel, Kubrick’s editing in both the classical and montage style heightens suspense, creates dramatic tension, and suggests Danny’s psychological state.”

A great analysis of my favorite director.

Why did I like Sammy Hagar again?

June 24th, 2008 § 0 comments § permalink

Sometimes, a person cannot see how bad a situation is until he steps away from it. Now that Van Hagar is over, I see it from that fresh perspective.

Thank goodness that’s over.

Sam’s lyrics have always been poor, but he reached a new level of crap with his new single, “On A Roll.” Here’s a sample

“Ladies and gentlemen, start your engines

I’m on a roll

Well, I’m on a roll let it roll

Roll, roll, roll.

Well, I’m on a roll let it roll.

Roll, roll, roll.

Well we rollin’ for a while

comin’ up on turn three”

Goodness.

Goodbye, George

I’m so very sad that George Carlin has died. He was absolutely brilliant, hysterically funny and a vocal, critical thinker. I’ve seen him perform three times and each show was fantastic.

George is most famous for the seven dirty words, but he was so much more than that. Here I’ve collected some of my favorite bits.

If you haven’t read When Will Jesus Bring the Pork Chops?, do it. The chapter on what he calls “The Male Disease” articulates perfectly exactly what I despise about the bullshit macho male culture in American society. It’s brilliant, it’s dead-on and it’s very funny.

Warning: Lots of “bad” words follow. You have been warned.

Thank you for sharing your mind and your humor with the world. I’ll miss you, George. Rest in peace.

Why the government is opposed to a populus that engages in critical thinking

George on white people

George on language. A perfect example of how smart George was.

Pro-life is anti-woman

My favorite one, the Ten Commandments

Modern man. I saw him perform this live. Brought the house down.

Squirrel Nut Zippers – a deam come true

June 20th, 2008 § 0 comments § permalink

In 1994, I graduated from college and broke up with my long-time girlfriend (that’s not the “dream come true” part). She had a year of college left, and I moved to Massachusetts to pursue my fame and fortune.

After a few months in Beantown, I returned to Scranton to visit her. She had started a radio show at the school’s station, and gave me a CD that she played whenever possible — The Inevitable by Squirrel Nut Zippers.

I popped it into the car’s CD player for the drive back to Mass. As I hit the Pennsylvania/New York border I was starting to sing along, and by the time I reached Connecticut I was a full-blown fan.

Since then, I’ve purchased everything they’ve released, but I’ve never seen them live.

That streak is about to end.

The band went on hiatus several years ago, so imagine my amazement when I saw on their wikipedia page that they’re touring again. Not only that, but they’ll be playing right here on Cape Cod. Incredible.

I’ve already purchased my ticket. To say that I’m excited about this is an understatement. I can’t freakin wait. This is going to be the conccert of the summer.

Cabo Wabo Cantina opens

Pretty much the reason why Sammy Hagar and the Van Halen brothers hate each other.

Check out the footage of the boys playing “Cabo Wabo,” Alex in a pink T-shirt and Michael Anthony within 100 yards of Edward because it’ll never happen again. If they only knew then.

While we’re on the subject … Ed, you are the shit:

Politics and the scientific community

Ged posted a message to Twitter about the launch of a joint US-French Satellite meant to track and monitor climate change, and I thought of the scientific community’s willingness to embrace nations that their political representatives would shun. From the MIR to this satellite and a whole history that preceeds both, these men and women are able to recognize that the persuit of knowledge to benefit all of humanity is greater than adolescent name-calling that keeps the rest of the world at war. Sad.

Japanese living spaces

June 20th, 2008 § 0 comments § permalink

My fascination with Japanese culture started as a child, when my uncle retired from the US Navy. He was stationed in Osaka, Japan, and married a Japanese woman who peppered my childhood with tidbits of Japanese life.

Today, I’m as interested as ever. This article on Japanese living spaces at PingMag is great. The author notes that he couldn’t determine a standard Japanese “style,” but did notice some similarities, like the tendency to cover windows (which my aunt and uncle don’t do) and keep obscure Japanese food in the ‘fridge (which they do. In fact, they have very little “American food.”).

I love exploring foreign cultures – the more “foreign” the better. Once I’ve made my millions, I’ll spend the rest of my days travelling the world.

The iPhone's malfunctioning headphone jack

June 19th, 2008 § 0 comments § permalink

This morning I noticed that, while typing on my iPhone, I didn’t hear that familiar little “click” with each key press. I thought I had accidentally toggled the ringer button as I’ve done before, but it was set to ring.

I hit the lock button and didn’t hear the locking sound, either. Concerned, I played a song. Nothing. I pressed the volume button on the phone’s side and the screen read “Headphones.” Drat, it seems to think there are headphones inserted.

I put my headphones in and listened. Yup, heard the music. So I rebooted the phone, but there was no change. I made a phone call and toggled the speaker button on and off. No change. I reset the phone with the hold and home button. Still no sound without headphones.

Finally, I followed some great advice from Twitter and blasted a bit of compressed air into the headphone port and that did it. Sound has been restored.

It must have interprteted collected “junk” as headphones. Just thought I’d share incase any of you run into the same problem.
