Earlier today, I removed an optical drive/hard drive cage from a 500mhz G3 iMac, and noticed that the resulting cavity is about the size of a Mac mini.
You know what I did next.
I grabbed a mini, removed the body and placed it inside the iMac. If not for a bit of metal holding the left speaker in place, it would fit perfectly. That’s nothing a Dremel can’t fix.
I believe that the wires running to the power button and power indicator light on the iMac could easily be reworked to operate the mini.
At this point, I can’t let this go.
I pulled the iMac’s board to try and see where the CRT is connected. Unfortunately, it’s beneath the shield, so digging around in there will take some work (and caution, as a CRT can be lethal).
Anyway, here’s my latest half-assed, barely-thought-out project. Updates soon.
The Cape Cod Tech Workers Meetup* is scheduled for this coming Friday, May 16th (details on the wiki).
I thought it’d be fun to bring a vintage Mac packed with vintage games. So, I’ll be carrying a Mac Classic with all the games I can find between now and then. Yahoo!
*This is my proposal for a new title. What started out as a Twitter meetup has clearly expanded beyond Twitter.
“You don’t play it safe — you do something that scares you, that’s at the edge of your capabilities, where you might fail. That’s what gets you up in the morning.”
Today I started a new feature at davecaolo.com — blogger weekend projects. A new project each Saturday designed to improve your blog. This week, it’s Pimp Your RSS Feed.
It starts with two slices of wheat bread, just because it stands up to grilling better than white.
Heavily butter one side of each slice, and place the first slice, butter side down, into a hot pan.
Place two slices of American cheese on the bread, and cover with the other slice, butter side up.
Flip after a few minutes and when both sides are nice and brown, serve that sucker up.
Summer variation
When real tomatoes are available (not those Styrofoam balls with tomato flavoring they strip mine down in Texas), I place two very thin slices on top of the cheese.
Condiments
You may dip into ketchup, but don’t put any directly on the grilled cheese. It’ll get soggy and nasty.
